Is it posssible that any of my actions below had corrupted the /etc/httpd/httpd.conf?

I got my friends fit-pc2 with SMS-2.0.7 about 6 weeks ago. He had used it as a web server for at least the last three years.
When I first booted it I noted which configuration files he had changed, which were present and what services he started up at boot.

Now, after this initial overlook I
changed root password
changed his user password

changed the computers
hostname
IP-address
domain
gateway
DNS

changed /etc/X11/xorg.conf (as discussed in another thread) to get a better resolution

installed samba and configured it to start at boot.

When I next time booted up the fit-pc2 I found /etc/httpd/httpd.conf was totally corrupted:
filled with dots "." from beginning to end. I could find no auto-backup .conf~
One thing I noted was that the number of dots and lines seemed consistent with
an ordinary httpd.conf.
It was a pity since I had hoped to learn things from his special solutions. The corruption made this impossible.

The /etc/httpd/extra/httpd-ssl.conf and httpd-vhosts.conf were OK.

Is it possible that I had caused the corruption of httpd.conf through any of my actions (above)?
I've never experienced anything similar though using apache from time to time for at least 6-7 years.

Now this will probably be my last question about the initial problems with my legacy fit-pc2 Wink. For the rest of the configuration I think I can learn most of it from my notes from configuring the 1.6.0 version of SMS.

Regards
Lars

..in retrospect: In one sence I was uncareful when I made the reconfigurations above: Normally I should have stopped all internet related services before I made the changes above. This time I didn't. No real excuse here but I think I thought I didn't have a complete overview of all the services he was running? That is httpd was up and running while I changed hostname, IP, domain. gateway and dns. Could this have cause the corruption of httpd.conf?

For start, look at /var/etc_backups if there is a backup there, that of course if your friend had ran "smsconfig backup save", you can always run it anytime to backup /etc configuration files...

Now for httpd.conf, I saw it in the past on another client, but that client ran a script for autoinstalling a webserver and involved httpd.conf as well...

"netconfig" would modify httpd.conf, upon execution but not corrupt it, though as it sed the hostname only...

Did you ran any other script of any kind...?

No, I could find no backup directory /var/etc_backups. There only was an empty /var/backups.
-Thank you for the tip anyway, I think I may use it mysels intead of doing it manually Smile .

As you say I ran pktool->setup->netconfig, but afterwards just checked /etc/hosts , hostname and resolv.conf, /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and edited manually where necessary. -No other script than netconfig was used.

And about httpd running during the reconfig, I'm not really certain if it was? In fact I think I shutdown the services I wanted to care about before the changes, that is: httpd, proftp, vsftpd.
And if they were running, no one was attached to the services since they were not reachable through the firewall.

I am very thankful though that you looked into the question. Even if the httpd.conf was corrupted it was a pity, not a catastrophy.

Best regards
Lars
