Can anyone help me with setting up 4 disk Raid 5 on SMS?
I have read the directions but I am lost with the fact it keeps talking about RAID 1 then all of a sudden RAID 5 for the home partition (ONLY?).
1. Prepare disks for RAID 1 Array (clone /dev/sda to /dev/sdb)
sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdb
2. Create RAID 1 Array for root partition
mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level 1 --raid-devices 2 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1
3. Create RAID 1 Array for swap partition
mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level 1 --raid-devices 2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2
4. Setup swap area
mkswap /dev/md1
5. Create RAID 5 Array for home partition
mdadm --create /dev/md2 --level 5 --raid-devices 3 /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde
I am very familiar with RAID configurations so I am not asking for help on the hardware side only the SMS side.
In other versions of Linux the operating systems saw the RAID as a single logical volume as it should but no luck with SMS.
I am planning on using this server for the primary server farm SMTP relay and internal email server.
Any help on setup/ configuration is very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Ok so that document was for software RAID.
I am using hardware.
I found the problem:
cfdisk did not recognize my RAID hardware so I used Ranish Partition Manager and manually assigned the partitions and allocated them as Linux and Linux swap (respectively).
After doing this the SMS installer went perfectly!
Hope this helps someone to not fall into the same problems! |
