When I chose the layer 7 patch, the install went fine. However, upon rebooting the system could not find any nic interfaces. Not even upon manually configuring with ifconfig. Not sure if anyone else has seen this.

I'll check it, if you want to choose layer7 patched kernel you should use 2.6.24.5 kernels of previous SMS versions or older version of SMS, as older kernels are more stable with layer7 pathes.
No need to reinstall SMS for changing kernel. Just install the new kernel and type 'lilo'.
