I noticed under the admin menu that the system tab has backup filesystem. What media can this backup to? I noticed that the menu uses the word 'tape'.
In doing a backup, do you recommend backing up the whole system or just the directories that have data? |

It says file or tape.
Just put your directories you want to backup and use tar.gz, this way it will be a kind of package and save space but you might loose speed as it will tar it..
You can backup the whole system if you like, but most likely the directory which it's most important it's /etc/ were all the configuration and scripts are.
You can add other directories you feel, that need to be saved. such as mysql or ldap databases e.g. /var/lib/mysql/ or /var/lib/openldap-data
Web directory maybe /var/www/
It's up to you and what you want to backup.
You can set a cron job as well to backup automatically, so you don't want useless stuff to take place and time of your server as it will tar them.
