What do I need to do to get Windows 7 to see SAMBA and the torrent.
It looks like SAMBA is available to the network because it's there for Linux.

Actually nothing, you should be able to access shares at \\sms or \\[your_ip] from a windows machine...
Do you get an access denied or something else?

I tried \\sms, \\bluffcity (hostname) got Window network error.
Not sure about IP addresses so I ran route in terminal and tried \\192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.104 and got the same error.

Run "smsconfig sys" to see your IP address, also "smsconfig smb st" to check samba is running...

Does your windows machine is on the same subnet 192.168.1.0...?
What's your windows machine IP ?
When you said, cannot connect, is it connected on network, whats your network status on windows 7?

i ran ipconfig on the window machine. IPv4 192.1168.101, Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
Yes I think it's on the network because I can see the SAMBA share from a Puppy Linux machine.
I was referring to the internet. The browser is actually Konqueror. Just tried Konqueror again and I can connect to google.
My domain (Ithink that's what it's call.) is local.net. So, in Konqueror I tried https://local.net and got Timeout on server error.
Tried the Webmin icon and got "the process for https://local host protocol died unexpectedly. I I also opened the sms_config icon. Clicked the netconfig button. Both hostname and domain were blank. I thought I would see the host and domain I used during full install.
Hardly any experience with either Linux or Windows console. I'm using Scott Granneman's book Linux Phrasebook as a guide.
I do apologize for my inexperience.

If you see the hostname with "smsconfig sys" or with "hostname -f" it's ok..
When you said domain, you mean you login on a windows active directory server?
If that's the case you will never see anything outside the domain, you need to sign in the SMS server (samba) in windows domain with the Windows server Administrator credentials...

I can see 'BluffCity' in Windows Explorer. But can't access BluffCity from windows machine.
On the SMS server getting Konqueror error "timeout on server bluffcity."

just to clear this out...
Are you logged in a domain (windows server)?
Cause if you do I need to guide you differently...

I googled "windows active directory server." Per Wikipedia, Active Directory checks the submitted password and determines whether the user is a system administrator or normal user. I have administrative privileges on the windows machine “T500-WIN7”.
I see BluffCity in T500-WIN7’s network folder. But when clicking on BluffCity I get this error message “Windows can not access \\BluffCity error code 0x80070035 the network path was not found.
Am I missing something on the SAMBA side, like setting up a user.
Also smb://workgroup has T500-WIN7 machine. And I can access T500-WIN7 using my logon and password for T500-WIN7.
thanks, peasant |

OK! you are not a domain user, are you by any chance running an antivirus with firewall like norton 360 or nod e.t.c.?
Try to add 192.168.1.0 subnet in exceptions in firewall...

No, I don't have a Windows machine acting as a server.
I did many years ago when Windows XP was new. Gave that machine away sometime ago.

I turned essentials off and tried to open BluffCity. Got the same error message.
I've added 192.168.1.0 to MS Essentials to Setting / Excluded files and locations. Got the same error again.
It's interesting that I can use the SAMBA server BluffCity to access the Windows machine T500-WIN7 folder.
Thanks for sticking with me. peasant |
