I've just had a server which suffered a hardware fault (wasn't wonderful hardware to start with, and developed some strange problems after a couple of power outages).

New hardware seemed like the best answer, so I moved the hard drives from the old hardware to an HP Proliant Microserver (dual core Turion, 2 GB RAM).

Had a bit of a problem after the transfer. Pretty well everything works, except the network. The HP has a Broadcom Netextreme BCM5723 gigabit NIC onboard. The correct kernel module was loaded (tg3), but ifconfig was only showing lo, no ethernet.

What have I missed? SMS has support for the card, but It certainly wasn't seeing a network at all. I'm at a bit of a loss with this one - usually transfering a hard drive from one machine to another works pretty straightforwardly with Linux, so I'm not sure what I missed to have the network fail that way.

Paul.

Most likely your network is at eth1, what's the output of
Code:
smsconfig sys

Delete the udev rules of your old card or edit entry at
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

Thanks. That was it...

It looks as though the driver was still listed incorrectly in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.

Deleting it and restarting has sorted it out. Running much better on the HP.

Smile I'll know where to look if I have to move to new hardware again.
