|
|
Hi!
Still somewhat hesitating I'm considering an upgrade of my server from 1.6.0 to 2.05.
One reason for my hesitating is the large amount of extra builds, installations and configurations of extra packages I have made in the 1.6.0 after the basic install. -And of course, another is that my 1.6.0 has worked like a charm since install and still does!
But, if I upgrade I will need the devel packages for 2.0.5.
I remember you helped me with getting and installing the devel packages for 1.6.0 through
http://sms.it-ccs.com/isos/index.php?dir=SMS.Native.CD%2F
and install them thought install_packages.sh or with
upgrade --install-new /pathto/mountiso/slackware/devel/*.txz
Today I think I find the 2.0.5.iso through that same link. Can I use the same path and command to install them?
In your download area I also found
http://sms.it-ccs.com/isos/add-on/develpkgs205.xzm
Is it better to download that and install?
-If this way is to prefer, how do I handle *.xzm? I have never met it before?
I thought it was another mode of compression, but it obviously isn't.
Best regards

If your extra packages are build from source you have to rebuild them, that's for sure, because a lot of things have changed since version 1.6.x.
Always look at wiki for upgrading instructions
http://sms.it-ccs.com/wiki/#LinkTarget_2293
Normally when you are upgrading you just add the devel path to your command e.g.
Code: | upgradepkg --install-new /mnt/cdrom/slackware/{a,ap,d,l,n,devel,x}/*.txz |
-----
For informational purpose, instructions for the old procedure:
The procedure it's the same, but if you are going to use the isos you need to download SMS.Native.CD-2.0.5-Extra.iso too, because it has 2 devel packages that were not fitting on first disk, kernel-source (required for building) and llvm...
You can of cource download the devel packages from SMS repository either with slapt-get
Code: | slapt-get --install-set --ignore-excludes -d devel (download only)
slapt-get --install-set --ignore-excludes devel (download and install) |
or manually at
Code: | http://sms.it-ccs.com/isos/index.php?dir=SMS-Current%2F (32bit)
http://sms.it-ccs.com/isos/index.php?dir=SMS64-Current%2F (64bit) |
The .xzm is for LiveCD only, to be able to compile source in Live mode...

Thank you for your thorough instruction gerasimos!
I understood and can use them!
Reading your answer I understand I must have been unspecific or unclear. By upgrading I meant doing a fresh install. But I saw your instruction link if I should dare (I have heard so many having failed upgrading, OpenSUSE, Debian as well as Slackware. Well, I've heard people succeed also )
Best regards

Well Thank you again gerasimos!
When I first installed SMS 1.6.0 I was not very used to Slackware, and obviously wasn't observant enough to note the option to choose install-packages in pkgtool. -That's why I got back to you in spring 2012. -As you then referred me to the download I first referred to in my question I erroneously thought that the devel-packages weren't included in the installation CD.
A bit wiser now!
You have been most helpful!
Best regards
