Hi,

I have tried to use sms before about 3 months ago, but with presure from other parties we have yet to implement it.

testing some configuration we have tried also the Resara server under Ubuntu 10.04, as you know resara is now closing we are only in the testing phase in trying to find the server box for us.

looking back with all the test, I think SMS will be best suited for the job. just one a few question and help to get me started. this week if posible.

- We have Both Windows and Linux OS

1. Can SMS act as a WINS Server or Local Name Resotion to resolve hostname in LAN for Linux to Linux, Linux to Window, Windows to Windows and Linux to Windows?
2. Windows and Linux OS can join to SMS PDC (configure help)?

This is primary Question for now because?
I have tried Resara in Ubuntu and windows is able to Join the Domain.
but I get :

DNS_ERROR_BAD_PACKET
A bad packet was received from a DNS server. Potentially the requested address does not exist.

and Im having a problem looking for help in local name resolution, would SMS server be able to solve this for me?

I will try SMS again this week.

Thanks

I haven't use resara, but I believe your problem it's not OS related, but in configuration...
First have you test name resolve in your LAN, to check that is actually working?
Here is a simple example of DNS

Do you know what version is your Samba server and what versions are the windows machines trying to log on?

Samba PDC act as an Windows NT4 domain controller, so you might need to regedit windows7 machines in some cases, along with some other tweaks like disabling 128bit encryption and changing LAN Manager authentication level in local policies.
