Hi, I hope this is not a repost but, I think its not as this is a general Question on a tipical server requirements. please help, I will detail my need and background as much as I can so that you have a detail of what I need and Probably this will also help others.

First of all, I have tested and seen the package of the distro, Iam only a few months to linux, I have 1 ubuntu 8.04 config for our ERP, I knowonly intermediate security and networking also above intermedaite on using linux. so far my testing in VM this package is a go for me.

- Story
currently i have arive in my company with a windows xp and an analogX proxy with more than 40PC's connected to it for internet though a certain port. detailed below

- Network we are only using workgroup no Domain Controller, PDC will be the next phase of implementation after this one.
--- Wired Lan
--- Wifi Access Point whic is connected to LAN which Serve's same subnet IP's
--- We have issue with the DHCP on Wifi coz no routing table is define so we used static IP on some of PC and Laptops

- WinXP Server
--- Not Configure as a Local DNS Server with this client cannot ping or locate other client using the hostname in the network.
--- Not Configure as Gateway
--- Internet is only shared through Proxy
--- AnalogX proxy is installed to provide shared internet
--- No Web DNS is configure like (8.8.8.8 ) - which often serve a 404 to client - it often fails to resolve the address
--- Use as Fileserver with no security through windows shared(samba)

- Client PC's
-- Linux Mint 10 and Above, Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and above
-- Windows XP, Vista, Window 7

------------------------------------
Please Help me with the Following Goal - I know this Topic will also be a great help to other users.
------------------------------------
- Goal - setup the SMS server as a secure gateway, fileserver and using the squid as proxy, enabling certain port to be open for application such as GMail email apps. use the Superb Mini Server for the Following service

1. Proxy Server - Using Squid as Proxy - this is easy I dont need authentication for now this is a go as default with SMS (Domain Auth in the Future - not for now)

2. DNS - use SMS as Local DNS - which will allow local client's to resolved host name of other clients in the network.

4. File Server - use SMS as a secure file server - we will attach another Disk to the server which will served as DataDisk.
--- Create a Folder for Each Department
--- We will Create User/Password for Each Department so that data read/write will be restricted for each Folder.
--- Question - On testing, I have Shared a Certain Folder, by default it is accessble by the users publicly, but I cannot seem to configure the shared to be acess only by a certain user.
--- example: I create username "myuser" and share a folder "myfolder" by default any user access this folder from the network ex. from "windows or linux mint" but I cannot seem to configure sicurity and user for a folder

3. DMZ and Gateway
--- DMZ point to 1 ipaddress this is ok But
--- is it posible to allow only specific Ip's and/or Mac Address to pass through the SMS server as a gateway, so that it will not use the squid proxy?

4. Open Port not Fort Forward - I know port Forwarding can be configure to an open fort to a certain IPaddress, can I configure the Server or Squid to open a port so client can access for example google mail apps port?

I know there is a documentation but, I still want to post this as a compilation of guide to this issue if you know part of it and its already posted please add the link as a reply. as I go on, I will also test my configuration and post it here for other benifits.

I hope this is not too much to ask, but I know this will be a lot of help to other who might like to use this distribution.

Thank you very much for a nice package. Very Happy
Nick Ace

Those setups are already been discussed on different threads...

To configure SMS as gateway and firewall you can use EFG firewall at
http://yourserver/efg
similar topic

look also for squid
http://sms.it-ccs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=259
http://sms.it-ccs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=433

For DNS setup with BIND, and for dhcp server
http://sms.it-ccs.com/wiki/#LinkTarget_1332

For Samba user access permissions look at
http://sms.it-ccs.com/wiki/#LinkTarget_1542

Take at look at those links above, on how your are going to setup those features
and we can see the details later, whether if you are going to use a transparent proxy or not.

Change in webmin ADSL-Client (module config)
adsl-start
with
pppoe-start
and do the same for adsl-stop and adsl-status

or alternative create symlinks like

Code:
ln -s /usr/sbin/pppoe-start   /usr/sbin/adsl-start
ln -s /usr/sbin/pppoe-stop   /usr/sbin/adsl-stop
ln -s /usr/sbin/pppoe-status   /usr/sbin/adsl-status
