AMD Duron, KM400, 256MB RAM, installed ok with hugel7 (improper kernel?)
Because of RAM lack I've turned off all unneeded services, left only squid, dnsmasq, postfix, samba, apache, webmin, ntpd. IP's static. When it booted to login prompt, all works good for the first look...
But... the BOOTING PROCESS is quite strange... it freezes periodically, and it seems to continue when I taping keyboard or moving mouse (when gpm is already on). All sleep and APM BIOS settings are checked and set to minimum or no energy saving -- no effect. So, remote rebooting makes router dead 
What can it be? Who else seen the same trouble?
Please help, tell me something to try more...

To make upper things clean:
* SMS 1.6.1 Native, MD5 checked out OK
* installed OK full on primary HDD partition, reiserfs formatted, LILO in MBR
* made swapfile 512MB on / (but swap used only a little in fact)

Have you try switching kernel to huge, in case hugel7 is buggy?
You can also try to disable firewire, game ports, e.t.c you don't use from BIOS.

I didn't try alternative kernel for now while hanging server is far from me, and I can't add another kernel to LILO... but I've found certanly the same BUG here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/272247
May be some kernel options (acpi_skip_timer_override) described there will help me workaround that problem... or some BIOS/CMOS options (I'm not sure of it)... but it seems altering kernel (huge, generic, l7) with the same version on the same hardware will not fix this bug.
Please, those who has old AMD CPUs, nVidia chipsets, Lenovo S12 netbooks -- test and make us know if that bug takes its place.

In short -- abnormal code behavior on non-standard/missing keyboard controller i8042 which serves not only keyboard, but IRQ and reboot process:

Tried all methods.
Kernel options key acpi_skip_timer_override helps only.
Also I've upgraded BIOS, because of any PCI NIC card in any slot didn't works before -- detected, loaded drivers OK, but no one packets sended/recieved.
BIOS upgrade doesn't solve freezing at boot problem.

Problem is SOLVED! 
I haven't got enough patience to try all 2*4! variants, each of twice reboot/login/check/edit lilo.conf/lilo/reboot/press RESET... but lucky me! -- "boot=k,a,c,b i8042.reset" kernel parameters do the job!
Deeper investigations allows me to shorten the solution to only "boot=b" kernel parameter into lilo.conf global append clause.
Now this exact SIS chipset based motherboard successfully reboots entering shell commands
