Hi folks,
just wonder whether and how I can use SMS as a centralized backup station (sort of a NAS).
rsync?
is it possible to work it in a mixed LAN (SMS and Windows pc)? how?
thanks.

If you want to backup your windows PCs to SMS, use samba to share folders and there are dozens of programs to do the syncing.
You can even use xcopy or robocopy from within windows shell, to synchronize folders.
If your machines have vista or windows 7 you can enable NFS on them and use NFS instead of samba.

Hi gerasimos_h,
thank you for suggestions.
the usb hdd I want to use as a backup NAS is NTFS formatted, so I added it to samba shares (all is OK) and I can reach it in my mixed home LAN (Win Xp, Win Vista and Win 7). When I finally configure folders to back up with a sync software (dsyncronize) I get a 'permission denied' message.
Usb hdd is mounted on /mnt/usbhdd and is owned by root.
What permissions do I have to assign to usbhdd folder in /mnt and what is the correct fstab line to mount it so that a windows user can write on the usbhdd (ntfs formatted)?
thanks again!

You have to mount with ntfs-3g e.g.
Code: | mount.ntfs-3g /dev/sde1 /mnt/usbhdd |
an fstab line should look like
Code: | /dev/sde1 /mnt/usbhdd ntfs-3g defaults 0 0 |

Hi,
yes gerasimos_h, that was easy to make fstab do the work.
Only I had to give writing permissions to samba share to access the USB hdd from witjin my Home LAN.
thanks. greetings!
