Over all I like sms. But there are some things that I struggle with. I am a teacher working with native american Indians in New Mexico. The two schools I work with are located very remote. We had some federal funding and have two small networks. There is a need for expansion but no monies are availbable. So, I decided to take on using open source. We have implemented a couple of servers - moodle and joomla. I set those up and configured them. They work great!
I think sms could possiblely become our primary server. However, with that said, there are challenges for me with sms.
1. The install goes very well.
2. configuring the network with dhcp went well.
3. changing the hostname took two reboots before it accepted new name. Command line configuration did not take at all - used web interface.
4. configuring static ips has been unsuccessful. I have a Dell server with two nics: eth1 and eth2. I gave eth1 10.32.10.xxx, eth2 10.32.10.000 (for example). The server sits on 10.32.8.0 network. The subnet 10.32.10.0 is routed thru 10.32.8.10 DNS server.
Destination Gateway Netmask Interface
10.32.8.0 None 255.255.255.0 eth2
10.32.10.0 None 255.255.255.0 eth1
127.0.0.0 None 255.0.0.0 lo
Default Route 10.32.8.2 eth2
This routing interface is not as intuitive for me as I would like. Have I done something wrong in route?
I am not able to ping 10.32.8.0 network or 10.32.10.xxx eth1. But when I change eth2 to dhcp I can ping eth1 10.32.10.xxx.
Is there something I am obviously doing wrong?
5.Nating - I finally found nat under firewall tab. I wanted to have eth1 nated to eth2. So users come in on eth1 and go out on eth2. This section I am having problems with.
I really don't expect anyone to help me figure this out, but if someone with more admin skill happens to read this and has some answers it would be very appreciated.
This product has alot of potential and I am committed to learning it with the goal to helping document it.
thanks
ps. if I am being a pest let me know ... |

Try to type netconfig next time for setting network's hostname and IP...
I'm little bit confuse, between what results you have and what you want to succeed.
Please paste the output of all NICs and what you want to do, and where SMS is installed.. Dell has SMS?

Good morning - sorry about confusion. I will try again. BTW, read the slackbook yesterday. Thanks for the pointer to that.
SMS is installed to hard drive on Dell server.
Dell: 2 nics, 2G memory, 80G hard drive.
Network: Main backbone is 10.32.8.0; Subnet 10.32.10.0
The Dell box is physically in a room connected to 10.32.8.0. Our router (not sms) has route to 10.32.10.0.
The Dell nics are configured as eth1:10.32.10.165, eth2:10.32.10.167
Gateway is : 10.32.8.2 DNS:10.32.8.10
I changed the hostname of Dell to server1.example.org.
The previous post shows router config in sms webmin.
If I try to ping out, I get the message network unreachable. If I try and ping Dell box I get no reply.
So, I was asking if anyone saw something missed configured.
After reading slackbook, I used netconfig to setup network. I found that nothing changed. So, I rebooted and still nothing changed. So I went back to editing /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf.
thanks for the help |

You Have both NICs on same network, that's not good...
If you DHCP one NIC you said it's working that's because that NIC takes 10.32.8.xxx IP.
If you don't need both NICs disable one. cause having them in the same IP range is wrong and useless.
You should have eth1 for you internet as an external interface
and eth0 for your local network as an internal interface.
If you don't plane to do this, and already have this by a router or DSL/Modem router you don't need to use both NICs on DELL server.
When you say router meaning a DSL modem/router or something like zeroshell?
I hope my message was helpful and got you out of your confusion.
