solving my last problem with throughput, i found that from my one HDD i have normal transfer but from other i have quarter of it so i'm looking now for hardware problems

during nice using off my server i noticed that when i'm on vnc window from other PC when i click Kde>logout i have black screen and nothin happens, so i close vnc and i need to delete X1 file to could connect next time

how to correctly logout from vnc session ?

now i have problem at all to connect my server

when i want to start rc.vncservers i get this :

/./etc/rc.d/rc.vncservers status
Xvnc is not running!
> /./etc/rc.d/rc.vncservers start
Starting VNC server: 1:root vncserver: The USER environment variable is not set.

Actually you can't logout, since when running vnc logins in X server as user.
start vnc servers login through ssh and do an 'uptime' and you will see all the vnc sessions as users logged in.
Just close the session, and if you use more than one users don't use the same display number.

i have one more question
i'm not familiar with multithreading in linux so maybe you can help me, i have possibility to change my server to little better one but i dont know is this exchange is it worth the effort

here is specs for new server

SERWER IBM NETFINITY 5000
Parametry:
- p³yta g³ówna 2 procesorowa,
- procesory 2 x Intel Pentium III 500MHz,
- ram 256MB SDRAM ECC,
- dyski 4 x 9,1GB SCSI,
- napêdy: cd-rom, floop,
- 2 x LAN,
- RAID IBM SERVERAID PCI PN 01K7352

i have now single p3 500 and dont know whats better, change my uP to ~1ghz or change whole server to double 500mhz

for now my Server consuming 50W-70W

dont know the the double 500 solution but changing my uP to 1Ghz will increase power consumption only by 10W i think

what about linux ? do i need to reinstall everything ? or just move HDD from old one to new one ?

Webmin has a sysinfo module alternative you can use 'lspci' in bash.
I don't think you have a processor issue, and pentium III processors are not so power hungry.
You new server is better, but you need to put more RAM in your machine.
Migrating from one server to another is quite easy just plug your disk and bootup, and since you are having 4 SCSI disks and a hardware RAID, I would recommend a RAID10 setup.
Just boot from SMS Native or Live CD, mount your old and new disk and do
'cp -a /mnt/olddisk/* /mnt/newdisk'
and afterwards run 'lilo -r /mnt/newdisk' you might need to alter /etc/lilo.conf and /etc/fstab on your new disk before running your lilo command.
You can alternative use your favorite clone software such as ghost or acronis to do that.

about RAM im not sure, i see always in webmin on first page that :

0.67 (1 min) 0.36 (5 mins) 0.13 (15 mins)
Real memory 497.33 MB total, 214.20 MB used
Virtual memory 2.44 GB total, 51.78 MB used
Local disk space 1.80 TB total, 1.24 TB used

so 512 should be enough, but often see that in 15 mins probing my uP has 0.80 load so its a little bit too much, also i will be upgrading for another lan card so i now standing with two choices :
- add another lan card and change uP to 1ghz
- change to other server with 2xuP500mhz

i will not use those scsi hdd's, each of them consumes 10-12W and right now my whole server consumes 50W (with 8gb,1tb,1tb hdd's) so no way Smile

i will have some free time on christmas so i will try to get uP 1ghz and also CF card with CF_to_IDE extension and i will measure power consumes of this configuration

My goal is to not to go over 60W

BTW for getting info i used lshw - it has more detials on hardware than lspci
BTW2 i think something is wrong with one of my 1TB HDDs, i have transfer from it on level 3-4mb and from other 9-11,

Are your disk are identical brand and type?
You can use hdparm to do some testings on your disks.
"hdparm -Tt /dev/sda1" "hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb1" and compare the results.

what do you think about that ?

/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 250 MB in 2.01 seconds = 124.13 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 128 MB in 3.01 seconds = 42.54 MB/sec
root@mediaserver:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb1

/dev/sdb1:
Timing cached reads: 250 MB in 2.01 seconds = 124.21 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 44 MB in 3.39 seconds = 12.98 MB/sec
root@mediaserver:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb1

/dev/sdb1:
Timing cached reads: 250 MB in 2.01 seconds = 124.14 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 24 MB in 3.37 seconds = 7.12 MB/sec
root@mediaserver:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 248 MB in 2.01 seconds = 123.53 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 164 MB in 3.02 seconds = 54.30 MB/sec

Are your disks are identical regarding cache (8MB, 16MB, 32MB) and speed (SATA 1/2)?
Have you try changing controller's SATA ports?
Does sdb1 is working on seeding, downloading?

i didn't change the PC, i'm waiting for new mb with atom on board Smile

i have two 1TB hdd, one is regular samsung, second is green WD, problem is with WD, also WD is used to store rtorrent downloads but during speed tests i kill rtorrent
those disks are new so they both have 32mb cache and they are sata2 disks

don't know is this right place to ask but i will ask anyway,

How antivirus works on linux ? i activated clamav and its working all the time but i found lot of viruses on my media drives, probably one of the pc from my network put them to mapped drives
anyway i thought that antivirus will prevent that kind of situation like in windows, that it is not possible to infect mapped drives, i needed to remove lot of data (exe-files only ) and today i found another so it is still infecting but dont know from where

when i will be migrating to a new PC i want to install SMS from the beginning but i want to backup some of the settings like, rtorrent paths and users, also nfs shares
can you help me with collectiing that data ?

WD Green series are not the fastest WD disks comparing with Caviar Black or Blue but I had no issues with them.

You can use avast antivirus for linux which has resident protection.
Clamav it's for scanning mails, but you can add a cron job to scan selected folders or drivers but will decrease you performance.
You could clean your drives with "clamscan" instead of deleting manually files.

I would recommend downloading Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware from malwarebytes.org and clean your PCs and additionally installing Avast! or any other antivirus on your PCs.

Rtorrent configs are under /home/Administrator if you haven't change them.
NFS shares are in /etc/exports.
Mainly if you backup your /etc/ folder contains almost all the configuration data.
Don't need to reinstall SMS though, It's not windows it's linux Wink

so clamav is not memory resident program ? hmm

i'm using avast on all my windows machines, unfortunatelly sometimes something go through it and bad things happens Sad

performance is less needed if data is unprotected
i will give it a try,

if i will upload smart log from drives, can you figure out whats happening ? because i suspect drive faults, WD is my bad guy,
anyway my hardware knowledge says me that smart should loud out it to me that smth wrong with the drive

If you clean your PCs with Anti-Malware I don't think you will have problems.
SMART not always catch the problem, send me the logs though to take a look.
MB migration might fix you issues, certainly will make a difference of what you have now, since there will be no "bottleneck" issues.
