Hello,

I'd like to customize SMS for my mother's computer and I have a few questions.
I want to add a few programs like xdialog and VNC so I can help her if she has
problems.

1. Can I modify the system running from the LiveCD, then write it to an external hard-drive, or
do I need to install SMS to a hard-drive, THEN create the LiveCD?

2. When using the Linux-Live scripts, can the ISO be written to a vfat partition, or does it need
to be written to an ext2 / ext3 partition?

Thanks!

SMS looks GREAT!

You don't need to install SMS to hard drive to edit it, but you don't need to rebuild the whole SMS for adding packages either.
If you want to add packages, just build or use a pre-built slackware package, boot to SMS and you can "tgz2lzm" the package and then added to folder modules of iso.
Another way is to install several packages with installpkg -root /some-folder/ your-pkg.tgz and then do dir2lzm /some-folder/ your-pkg.lzm
.lzms can be placed on folder modules for boot livecd or installed on an SMS installation with "lzm2dir lzm.lzm /"

If you want to rebuild the whole SMS or build your LiveCD you have to edit ".config" file on linux-live scripts and change the TMP= to a physical drive path.. I don't see any reason not be able to write to vfat partitions.

Hello,

Thanks for the information. I'll try to do the following.

Add the KDE.lzm module ( My mother will need the KDE, she's not a bash person )
Add VNC ( She gets stuck, so I'll need to help her from a remote location )
Create a menu with xdialog to choose ether static-ip or DHCP
Try to remove some software or at least keep it from loading ( Her computer needs more RAM )
Then write the LiveCD using the linux-live scripts.

Post the howto on the mirror I've setup.

Thanks for you help.

I'm making SMS modular at the moment but I'm not in a hurry, that means that I'm splitting packages for custom installations...
SMS base ~38MB
Network (servers) ~ 55MB
So SMS will have a minimum installation to under 100MB

So you could remove pkgs that you don't need such as webmail, torrentflux and others, but be careful with dependencies and shared libraries...

Thanks for Using SMS
