one of my beef with using BT on an X-less *nix box is the lack of asian language/font support. i dont need to input in CJK (chinese, japanese, korean), but it would be nice that the downloaded CJK filenames dont get jumbled up!

in other words, when i download a file with an asian UTF (or BIG5, HZ, etc) filename, i should be able to see that filename when i:

1) download it to a mac/win pc for viewing
2) view the folder via the web interface
3) view the folder via console
4) view the folder via ftp
5) view the folder via samba

can SMS support this?

Add to your /etc/samba.smb.conf
dos charset= [code page of your language] for instance greek it's CP737
unix charset=[ encoding of your language] for instane greek is ISO8859-7
display charset=UTF-8
and you should have no problem with samba.
From web you sould try changing the encoding from your browser.
From unix/mac you have to mount the share with your iocharset if you experience problems.

thanks for your suggestions! i'm a little late in my reply, sorry!

i have actually disabled samba as my server is on the router's DMZ. thus, i prefer to reduce the number of ports open. i get files off the server using secure ftp ... in addition to unreadable file names when i use ftp, the same also happens when i ssh in (using PuTTY).

do you have any suggestions? i have tried looking online for a long time with no results Sad

In PuTTY go to Category:/window/translation and set the language.
