I am using native cd which has java 4. I need to use 5 or 6. Should I remove the current devel java package before I install java 5?

That's gcc-java needed for compiling java code applications, SMS don't have java.
Just install java 6 package from slackware source tree.
jre-6u11-i586-1 in slackware/l is the java you want.
jdk-6u11-i586-1 in extra/jdk-6 for compiling apps such as openbravo.
