How do I change the colors in the shell? The green and pale blue text are very hard for me to read.

Describe shell...
Do you mean Shell from kde as an xterm console or the default shell of SMS base installation with the bootsplash background?
If the bootsplash is annoying you, you can disable it in /etc/lilo.conf or brutally disable it by deleting or renaming /boot/initrd.splash or you can create you own. _________________ Superb! Mini Server Project Manager

the default shell of sms. Its not annoying - I just can't see the text very well in the green color or blue.
