I'm running and testing my Samba server (SMS 1.6.0) and I have modified
my symbolic links, subdirectories and configuration files so my Samba and FTP files are saved on my /home subdirectory which is ~475 Gig. My SMS system is installed on a ~5 Gig Partition which is 55% full. I'm only using FTP, Samba, and the CUPS Print Server. Everything else wasn't installed or is disabled.

When I try transfering a 6 Gig Folder from my Debian 6.0 Laptop to my
/home/smb/samba/FTM-80 subdirectory (drag & drop), the transfer starts, but about 40-50% into the transfer I get a Timeout Error. I don't see any configuration in the /etc/samba/smb.conf for any timeout. Is there a problem with the size of the SMS Partition, or a problem with the tmp subdirectory size causing the timeout? If not, what is causing it?

I've searched the internet and there was a suggestion about adding the netbios name. That did not help solve the problem.

When it times out I have to go to the Server, login, then reboot as nothing seems to function over ssh either.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Larry

What filesystem your /home partition has?
What /var/log/samba.[your ip or name] says?
Have you try sending the data from another machine?

Here is the information on my Partitions:

root@smsldkserver:~# df

And here is the information contained in File: samba.__ffff_192.168.1.250

I am also getting a lot of these error messages, over and over in the logs:
smskdkserver FaxGetty[xxxx]: Modem /dev/ttys0 appears to be wedged

I can tag an 8 Gig folder in Filezilla and transfer the complete folder to
my SMS Server but it's xfer rate is ~40 to 100 kbps versus 2.3 Mbps
with Samba, so it takes a lot longer.

I'm trying a xfer from my other laptop (Ubuntu 10.04) now. I'll let you
know how it goes.

THANKS.

I logged in my SMS Server (Samba) and started a 1.6 Gig xfer with my Ubuntu 10.04 Laptop. I started an xfer (Copy & Paste) to my Samba Share. Here is the log file for it:

root@smsldkserver:/var/log# cat samba.__ffff_192.168.1.201

root@smsldkserver:/var/log#

Next I continued to process my Filezilla Queue of 6 Gig to xfer via FTP to my SMS FTP Server, and I started a Samba xfer of 1.8 Gig to my Samba
Share. Here is that log file:

root@smsldkserver:/var/log# cat samba.__ffff_192.168.1.206

My first laptop completed the xfer of 1.6 Gig, while my second one continued with the 6 Gig FTP and 1.8 Gig Samba xfers.....

And it finally completed. I just don't understand, because yesterday I tried
numerous times Samba xfers failed every time. Now today it worked once, on both laptops.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks.

Larry

Is your server's IP configured correctly?
is 192.168.1.250 listed in /etc/hosts as your hostname?
Also something isn't right with DNS in your network.

Contents of /etc/hosts

#
# hosts This file describes a number of hostname-to-address
# mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
# used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
# On small systems, this file can be used instead of a
# "named" name server. Just add the names, addresses
# and any aliases to this file...
#
# By the way, Arnt Gulbrandsen <agulbra@nvg.unit.no> says that 127.0.0.1
# should NEVER be named with the name of the machine. It causes problems
# for some (stupid) programs, irc and reputedly talk. :^)
#

# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.250 smsldkserver.org smsldkserver

# End of hosts.

I have not edited this file, and I assume this information was done during
install & setup.

I thought that something wasn't quite right with DNS but I don't know how
to check it or fix it. Can you offer suggestions? I assigned the OpenDNS
server's IP address when asked for DNS Servers. ie. 208.67.200.200

Thanks.

You need to set your router's/modem IP address as Gateway, in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf
and your DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf

My /etc/resolv.conf contains :

search smsldkserver.org
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220

My /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf is correct.

What ports do I need open in my Router for Samba xfers?

Thanks.

You don't need to open any port in your router, plus restrict samba to your network by adding in smb.conf
hosts allow = 192.168.1. 127.
so others don't have access via public networks.
