I have SMS 1.60 installed with just ProFTP, vsftp, Samba, and ssh enabled,

Passwords Changed, and I have set up everything in webmin as far as I

can determine. I've been able to use Filezilla, and transfer some test files

to /home on my SMS Server via vsftp as a test. SUCCESS!

Now, I would like to add my Brother HL-2140 (USB) to the CUPS printer

setup as default. But, I can't get the Printer Administration to accept the

printer connected by USB as default. The error is:

Failed to save printer : lpadmin failed :

lpadmin: Unable to open PPD file "/etc/cups/ppd/HL2140.ppd" - No such file or directory

So, how do I install a new printer and get my Brother HL-2140 Laserjet working via CUPS?

Also, I would like to get NFS working so I can access my SMS Server via NFS

from Debian 6.0. It works fine on FreeNAS ver 7.1, but I'd rather use

SMS with a network Printer. What am I missing on the NFS? I can't export

/home or get access? Ideas or Suggestions?

Thanks.

You need to provide HL2140.ppd during installation, at CUPS.

As for nfs have you added /home in /etc/exports?

 	  | Code: | | /home *(rw,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check) |

and start

/etc/rc.d/rc.rpc start

/etc/rc.d/rc.nfsd start

OK, I located and copied the HL-2140.ppd file from My Debian 6.0 setup

for FreeNAS to sms under /etc/cups/ppd Then, I went to the sms webmin,

and added the printer as a USB device #1 and CUPS printer.

I then logged in sms as root and did a lp debian.txt and lpr debian.txt

along with lpstat -p -d

My Brother HL-2140 shows as the default printer and is idle.

I cycled power on the Brother printer, then stopped, and restarted CUPS, and

Samba.

I am still not able to print. a test page. If I go to webmin and click on

my printer so as to show the list in the que, I have two documents

waiting to print. I delete them at that point, because they will never print.

Ideas or Suggestions?

Is there a good document or guide on setting up a CUPS printer in Slackware? I've searched the net and haven't located one.

What am I doing wrong? Why do I always have trouble doing something

easy?

I haven't got to the NFS portion and at this point I'm not looking forward

to brute forcing my way through it either.

Thanks.

I'd be glad to try to configure printer through CUPS http://localhost:631,

except I guess I'm going to have to locate and install a Video Card in the

Motherboard because I can't get xconf & startx to allow me to get to

the KDE Window Manager for CUPS configuration.

OK, I inserted a New Old Stock AGP Graphics Card, and got xconf &

startx working so I could configure the printer with http://localhost:631

and I can print from within sms.

If I had known about your posting of ... http://[yourserver]:631

I would have tried that to configure the printer, but as you can tell

I am new to sms and servers etc.

THANKS.

Now, I still can't print from my Laptop, but I can go to my SMS Server

and print files to my USB Brother Laserjet after I configured via

https://ldksms.local:631/admin

I have the printer set for:

Share printers connected to this system

& Allow Printing from Internet

But, for some reason I can't get my laptop to print to the Brother

Laserjet. I have a Wifi connection to my network and the sms Server

with USB printer attached is sitting idle. What am I missing/overlooking?

I'm about at my last straw. It's been too long trying over and over.....

Thanks.

Larry.

Assuming your laptop has Windows add a new network printer and choose

"connect to a printer on the internet..."

and type your URL

http://[yourserverip]:631/printers/[yourprintername]

and continue with driver.

If it's UNIX client use CUPS on client to add the printer the same way.

OK, my laptop is a Linux laptop running Debian 6.0. and I'd like a little more specific information.

You state: "If it's UNIX client use CUPS on client to add the printer the same way." How exactly do I use CUPS? If I go to http://localhost:631/admin on my laptop and click on "Show printers shared by other systems" and click on CHANGE SETTINGS, I get forbidden access!

I've tried https://localhost:631/admin also with the same results.

So at this point I'm stuck. How do I get access and when I do, do I insert my Laptop password or the SMS Server root Password?

Thanks.

Go to http://localhost:631 on your laptop and provide your root authentication to admin CUPS on debian.

Or you can go to (this is from ubuntu)

System/Administration/Printing

Add

Network Printer

Find Network Printer

and enter name or IP of your server and will find it automatically.

WHOO HOO! After trying several more hours I was ready to give up.....But,

I took the time to totally rebuild my SMS Server, and try the USB Printer

setup again. Everything went slick on the rebuild but after setting up the

USB HL-2140 Printer I still couldn't get my Asus Laptop to print. I then

went to the SMS Server, and tried to print a text document from the GUI.

It didn't work. At that point I didn't have a clue, so I unplugged the Printer

Cable, and then plugged it back in. I then could print a text file from my

SMS Server. After trying my Asus setup again I finally got it printing. WHEW!!! Finally!

THANKS. Looking good now!!!!!

Here is a text document of the exact procedures I used to install my

SMS Servers local Printer, along with information on setting up my Laptops

with network printers.

Maybe you want to edit/cleanup/modify as necessary to make a HOWTO:

to post in that section.

Hopefully it will save someone several hours of trouble.

THANKS.
