Hello

I seem to be unable to use FTP and looking into the installed packages I see vsftp and ProFTPD Server which confuses me - aren't both FTP servers?
Can you point me to some info how to set up FTP on SMS ?

Thanks a lot.

SMS has proftpd enabled by default.
You can choose between vsftp and proftpd.
You can alter the configuration of proftpd via webmin or if you have install x-kde-addon through gproftpd.

riteman: there are howtos on http://howtoforge.com that will walk you thru how to setup either one.

There are many who consider vsftp to be much more secure and faster than proftp. I've used both and found for me vsftp was faster. However, I think if you are letting users log into your site via ftp or transferring files, then proftp might be better.

anyway - a little reading on your part will help you to determine which one is right for you.

good luck

riteman:
You posted a good question.

I had both and was confused as well.

While configuring and testing FTP (which never worked - connection )both, I was at the point in thinking that one configuration was overriding the other and decided to remove both and start from scratch.

That led to me having problems reinstalling ProFTPD

(*see my post also in SMS User Support - hehehehe)

Thanks to gerasimos_h, I now have ProFTPD reinstalled.

I will also review the link provided by Baboo (thanks Baboo to you as well) to understand the best way to get my FTP going also.

I will also post my progress if that's Ok with you and if would be of any help. Wink

That's a good link indeed,
I always find webmin proftpd module a little bit confusing, and never got the touch of it, that's why I added gproftp.
