I have installed SMS and am learning a lot about Linux! It is great being able to make older hardware useful again. I cannot figure out how to install KDE. The packages that I see on the site are labelled for the "live" CD. How do I install it on a server that is already running? I cannot seem to find a "txz" file for the KDE desktop environment. will I need a bunch of dependencies also?

If you install it from SMS.Native.CD and you choose full installation it's already installed, else you will find it under
slackware/x/x-kde-addon-i486-3sms.txz in SMS.Native.CD-1.5.4-Install.iso
If you install it from SMS.Live.CD you can download x-kde-addon package from SMS-Current at
http://sms.it-ccs.com/isos/SMS-Current/slackware/x/x-kde-addon-13.1-i486-3sms.txz

Another way is to install it through slapt-get, just do
slapt-get --add-keys
slapt-get -u
slapt-get -i x-kde-addon

Thanks for the quick response. I installed with slapt-get since the original install was from a live cd using the text install scripts. It said that everything installed fine. When I run "startx", I get error messages:

(EE) Fail to load module "type 1" (module does not exist)
(EE) Fail to load module "freetype" (module does not exist)
(EE) VESA (0): No matching modes
(EE) Screen(s) found but none have usable configurations

Fatal Server Error: No servers found

xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno3): server error

I am a fairly new user to linux and my troubleshooting skills are still being developed, so I appreciate the help. I rebooted and get the same results. Does this mean that I am missing some dependencies for X server?

Thanks,
Igor948

Try to run "xconf" to configure your video card and after run "startx".
What type is your video card?

I'm not sure of the video card. It is a DELL PowerVault 745N server that came with on board video. I know that it is a fairly old card. I will have to look into it more, as well as research xconf more. THANKS, I really appreciate the help!!

It probably has intel onboard graphics, so you shouldn't have any problems.
Just type "xconf" and "startx".

Thanks again....xconf worked. It is working now. I am very thankful. The refresh rate shows up as 0 Hz and it isn't very adjustable, so it is just a matter of finding the proper driver now Very Happy

THanks again for the great distro
