Superb Mini Server version 1.5.2 released (Linux kernel 2.6.33.5)

This minor release clears the name of SMS to Superb Mini Server and brings new graphics and logos.
Some packages upgraded and two new packages added, hfsutils and tcl.
In this release we switched to postfix with no vda patch as the default MTA for SMS.
A version with vda patch is available in SMS.Native.CD-1.5.2-Extra.iso.
ndiswrapper, dahdi-linux and iptables_l7 rebuilt for new kernel, don't forget to run lilo after the upgrade.
In SMS64 fixed the segfault of metamail and added lost/missing curl package.
A Virtual Appliance of SMS-1.5.2 is also available.

Slack Mini Server version 1.5.1 released (Linux kernel 2.6.33.4)

My Changelog was getting full, a lot of packages upgraded, some added and few removed,
and looks quite stable and working good, so it's time for a stable release.
Although SMS has decline a lot from Slackware, at the time of the release, SMS-1.5.1 based on Slackware 13.1RC2, and unless Slackware doesn't move to 2.6.34 kernel you can call it 13.1.
New packages in this release are firmware for rt2860, rt2870, rt61, rt71 wireless cards,
bluez-firmware, microcode for Intel 1000 & 6000 wireless chips, iw, usb_modeswitch, ash,
giflib which replace libungiff, linux-pam splited from pamperl which removed.
Xorg and KDE are the same, as before, don't forget, that this is a server distro, and not a workstation for daily X use, so you probably wouldn't have to use X at all or use it few times only, and besides that, IMHO KDE3 is more productive than KDE4.

Slack Mini Server version 1.5.0 released (Linux kernel 2.6.33.2)

This release is based on slackware-current, although the kernel is
not the same at the time of release, slackware will move soon.
SMS-1.5.0 features additional generic kernels, with built in support
for ext2, ext3, ext4 & jfs file systems, so unless you are using reiserfs
you will have no problem booting to your newly install system even without an initrd.
Livecd kernel removed from main packages, it's available only in extras, for
remastering and testing purposes only.
Device-mapper package also removed as it's included in new lvm2 package.
New packages in this release are cpufreq, fftw, pycups, and libprelude.
KDE and Xorg server remain the same and have no changes.
SMS.Live.CD-1.5.0 has squashfs 4.0 patches so old add-ons wouldn't work with this version.
KDE add-on repacked with version 4 and it's available for download as kde150.lzm
Other add-ons will be repacked and uploaded as soon as possible.

Slack Mini Server version 1.4.8 released (Linux kernel 2.6.29.6)

This will be most likely the last 2.6.29.6 release of SMS, since slackware current moved to a new kernel (2.6.32.3)
and we need to follow the current tree for future releases.
SMS-1.4.8 features full PAM support as an alternative option in Extra CD under /extra/PAM,
but beware this transaction is for experienced users only, that want PAM for their reasons.
To turn authentication to PAM upgrade util-linux-ng-2.14.2-i486-2sms.txz and add to /etc/securetty vc/1..vc/7 just in case.
If you want to start the prelude registration server run
"prelude-admin registration-server prelude-manager & > /dev/null 2> /dev/null"
and to register
"prelude-admin register "PAM" "idmef:w" <manager address> --uid 0 --gid 0"
SMS will never use PAM as default authentication.
PHP 5.3.1 rebuild "--with-xmlrpc" option and fix some extensions bugs over previous php package.
The same applied to PHP-5.2.12 available in Extra CD.
Added missing libdmx.so and fixed the Y2K10 Rule spamassassin Bug in 72_active.cf.
Mysql upgraded to 5.1.x branch this might cause some problems if you are not upgrade postfix, dovecot, php packages as well.

SMS-1.4.7 features Postfix grey-listing policy service through sqlgrey for
better antispam filtering, if you are upgrading take a look at

Slack Mini Server version 1.4.6 released (Linux kernel 2.6.29.6)

New features in this release it's rtorrent with wtorrent web interface as a good alternative bittorrent client available in Extra CD, and ddclient, maybe the best dynamic dns updater nowdays.
Kernels 2.6.29.6 patched against a bug in proto_ops structures.
SMS-1.4.6 moved to cups-1.4.0 the cupsd.conf format has changed so don't forget to rename the .new files in /etc/cups/.
In some machines you might experience slow browsing in admin pages, in my devel machine had no issues, on my test machines I was having quite a lag.
I haven't found a reason for that yet, but it's working other than that.
Cups-1.3.11 it's available in /extra/packages if you want to downgrade.
Hplip compiled with qt3 and qt4 support for those who moved to KDE4, by default hplip starts with qt4 support, for KDE3 you must run 'hp-toolbox --qt3'.
Openbravo upgraded to version 2.50MP3 along with all required packages in openbravo directory.
New packages in this release are, libzip, ddclient, groff required by man, screen package required by rtorrent startup script, libaio required for oracle installations, PyQT and sip required for a working hplip, ilmbase, expect, imagemagick, djvulibre required by avantfax package.
Samba 3.4.1 is available in testing, looks quite stable but since it was released 2 days ago moved to testing.

Slack Mini Server version 1.4.5 released (Linux kernel 2.6.29.6)

It's only been a month before the latest release of SMS, but a lot of changes
took place and the kernel changed, so this update was imminent, to keep up with Slackware RC2.
New feature in this release is the Asterisk PBX available in Extra CD, including
dahdi-linux for 2.6.29.6-smp kernel, dahdi-tools, asterisk, asterisk-gui, asterisk-addons and libpri.
You probably don't need to install all of them, but it wouldn't hurt if you do either.
New packages in SMS-1.4.5 are, tk package needed by fetchmailconf, pygtk,
pygobject, pysqlite, pycairo packages needed by ZenmapGUI, if you are not using X you will not notice any difference.
Samba 3.4.0 and php-5.3.0 were added in testing, if you use slapt-get to upgrade
your system will upgrade samba and php to those two versions, if you have any issues just downgrade the packages from this release.

Slack Mini Server version 1.4.4 released (Linux kernel 2.6.29.5)
SMS moved to 2.6.29.5 kernel, all the packages upgraded to slackware-current rc1 (version 13.0 based on it's changelog).
The installer now supports ext4 filesystem.
KDE remained to 3.5.10, this could disappoint some of you but I could not imagine myself or any of you struggling his way with KDE4.
Dovecot upgraded to version 1.2 this will lead to some changes to your dovecot.conf, the only change you probably need to do is to
rename ssl_disable=no to ssl=yes or your dovecot server will not start, more info at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.2
Postfix upgraded to 2.6.2 and added optionally a version of postfix without the VDA patch at extra/packages.
PHP and Samba upgraded to current branch 5.2.10 and 3.3.6, it's wise to test PHP-5.3.x and Samba-3.4.x before we add them to SMS.
MadWiFi removed from package tree as 2.6.29 kernel has support for atheros chipsets.
Sqlite seems to taking an important place on linux systems and required by most of the packages so add in it to package tree was unavoidable.
Xorg server upgraded to version 1.6.1 despite that KDE stick at version 3.5.10.
SMS-Current renamed to SMS-1.4.3b, the new SMS-Current will be on .txz format to save space and time on upload (256kbps).
You can upgrade packages such as dovecot or postfix to SMS-1.4.3 you don't need to upgrade the kernel or move to SMS-1.4.4 if you don't want to.

This will be probably the last SMS version with the 2.6.27.7 kernel, since we will follow the slackware-current changelog.
Some new packages took place in this release such as at, gutenprint, lsof and xz.
From this version SMS uses .txz packages (lzma algorithm), the size reduced a lot, making SMS.Native.CD-1.4.3-Install.iso under 600MB
including the development packages. SMS repository thought will be kept for now with the .tgz packages for compatibility issues.
Openbravo ERP installer is now available in the Extra iso along with all the required packages, and a script to help you install openbravo ERP.

28/02/2009 -- SMS version 1.4.2 Released!

It's been two months since SMS-1.4.1 and a lot of changes took place.
New feature in this release is dansguardian, a web content filter, by default
dansguardian is disabled, to enabled it, make the startup script executable with
'chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.dansguardian'.
SMS-1.4.2 features optionally slapt-get. slapt-get it's not installed by default,
it's available in SMS.Native.CD-1.4.2-Extra.iso under testing folder.
It's not recommended to use it to upgrade older versions of SMS, but it can be done.
You just have to know what you are doing.
Some minor changes take place in startup scripts, rc.local it's empty now to add whatever
you want without any confusion. All rc.local lines moved to rc.M.
A lot of packages upgraded and SMS features the latest stable versions available such as
PHP-5.2.9, Postfix-2.5.6, Samba-3.3.1, Dovecot-1.1.11, httpd-2.2.11, MailScanner-4.74.16-1.

SMS-1.4.1 released! if you have wondering what happened to version 1.4.0, SMS-1.4.0 last only 3 days, found a few bugs, fix them and since I've never announce it officially, instead of reupload I decide to move forward.
System upgraded to Slackware 12.2 with linux kernel 2.6.27.7, added fail2ban a very useful app for securing your server from kids scripts that trying to break your system through SSH,FTP attacks mostly. Not that they are going to, but they are a waste of bandwidth, and to rare occasions might lead to a Denial Of Service.

SMS-1.3.13 released! The are some upgrades as well as some new packages.
Dovecot-1.1.x branch is the default IMAP server of SMS from now on, 1.0.x branch moved to extra/packages/ if someone prefers it.
Double check your dovecot.conf cause some options are deprecated.
Added PHPMyAdmin for managing your mysql databases and users, and mcrypt, for speed up phpMyAdmin.
Hylafax+ is working like it should now; there were some errors, in previous slackbuilds.
SMS.Native.CD-1.3.13-Extra has now a few new packages that might want to check out.
Added the well known horde groupware webmail app as an alternative to squirrelmail, an open ticket request system (OTRS), the well know egroupware application and a lan management system (LMS) quite good for routing.

In this new release we go a step farther and I believe will satisfy all of you. OpenLDAP upgraded to version 2.4.11, and for that a lot packages recompiled, 2.3 symlinks to 2.4 libraries added to retain slackware compatibility though.
TorrentFlux fixed due to not working in previous version and added some minor mods.
SMS 1.3.12 new features amongst all, are HDD recovery software which I found them quite useful, madwifi drivers for atheros chipsets,
tightvnc for remote desktop connections and sudo package.

I know it's been a couple of weeks before the SMS-1.3.10 but I had to release that version to go along with SMS.Native.CD-1.3.11.
A brief changelog:
-> Webmin upgraded to version 1.430
-> Default SMS mail server configuration changed from mbox to Maildir, SASL is looking to shadow instead of LDAP ,so is dovecot.
That is more understanding from all, 'cause LDAP was confusing a lot of users.
All you need is to run 'adduser' command to add a user and of course passwd those users, you can of course do it from webmin too.
Old ldap configuration files are still available.
-> Administrator account is getting root's mail. You can login through squirrelmail.
-> Changed pid location in OpenLDAP from /var/lib/run/slapd.pid to /var/run/slapd.pid for better cleanup after installation from SMS.Live.CD
-> Changed vmail gid & uid from 5001 to 999.

+ SMS.Native.CD-1.3.11-Install.iso is ready.
A few things to know are:
- That the installer will automatically install the kernel you boot from to your new system.
- netconfig is working during installation, but can't alter openldap since it's required /usr/libexec/slapd to be running, but it will alter /etc/openldap/sms.ldif, so either you import sms.ldif at first boot or you skip network configuration during install and run 'netconfig-lcd' on first boot of your new system to configure it all automatically.
- Default kernels are compiled with boot logo, you can download SMS bootsplash kernels and install them if you want bootsplash.
- lilo configuration will prompt you to choose between SMS lilo installation and classic slackware's lilo installtion where you can configure lilo manual.
- There will be a second disk with 'extra', just don't upload it yet. You can access the whole SMS-Current tree at http://sms.it-ccs.com/isos/SMS-Current

SMS becomes 1 year old.

It’s been a year already since the first release of SMS. I want to thank all of you who participate in the development and progress of SMS in any way. I would like to have SMS.Native.CD ready for SMS anniversary, but unfortunately my responsibilities kept me behind in time.
SMS Changelog.
-> Added a new netconfig script for changing SMS to your needs.
Running the new netconfig it will alter the whole SMS server to your new hostname and domain, including:
+ Apache configuration (httpd.conf, index.php)
+ Postfix configuration (main.cf, ldap-aliases.cf, ldap-maillists.cf, ldap-users.cf, webmin config)
+ Dovecot configuration (dovecot-ldap.conf)

It has been two months before the latest SMS version and lot of things changed.
SMS-1.3.8 is based on Slackware 12.1, basic servers are updated and will keep up updating despite Slackware tree (e.g Openldap 2.3.39).
SMS.Native.CD is changing structure to be easier to handle and to update; also there will be an SMS current tree.
For those things to happen of course it needs time, so SMS.Native.CD-1.3.8 will be released at a later time, you can of course install the liveCD version and install the appropriate kernel you want from a selection of 8 available SMS-Kernels, and install the update packages to maintained your SMS installation.

Well I was waiting for webmin to updated but I had to release SMS-1.3.7 to progress 1.3.8 version
with new kernels and versions of servers, since slackware current it's on 2.6.24.x kernel.
I have made a lot of tweak to configurations specially to mail server, I hope you like it.
I've keep mbox format as default though at the momment.

13/02/2008 -- SMS version 1.3.6 Released!

The local root exploit that affect kernels 2.6.17-2.6.24.1 forced me to release SMS 1.3.6 so quick.
It's a local root and not remote exploit, and don't give full root privileges,
can't reboot, halt, add or remove packages for instance but can delete and stop services amongst things and that's a problem.
Of course that all can be done by a user and not someone that has not access to the server,
but I believe that an well written web script can do bad things.
That problem affects all linux kernels despite distribution and it's not a Slackware issue.

SMS 1.3.5 is available for download and it has grown about ~3MB for SMS to have MailScanner package.
Webmin released yesterday version 1.400 so I included that as well.
Postfix-2.5 it's still under testing cause I haven't had the time yet for mailserver stuff, if you like to download
