Well I managed to install the Xorg + KDE part with pkgtool.
So now I know it's not the KDE part that's causing the trouble but rather the Xorg part.

I just installed 2.0.5 native cd to hard disk.
I wanted to use Fluxbox since KDE had problems on my system.
I did not install the KDE package and that apparently means I don't have Xorg either.

It appears that my problem is that my system is still trying to load kernel 3.2.20 even though it's no longer current.
On boot I get error messages from udev indicating that it cant find files

Is your adapter properly recognized,
what "ifconfig -a" says...
Apparently the adapter is not being recognized. It's an IBM EtherJet 10/100.
From which version did you upgrade?
